5-Aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid is a reactive sulfonation agent that is used in wastewater treatment. It is prepared by the reaction of naphthalene with sulfur trioxide and hydrochloric acid. The molecular modeling of 5-aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid has revealed its conformational properties, which may be due to the presence of an anthranilic group on one end of the molecule. This compound can also be used as an analog for hydroxyl groups in other molecules because it has a hydroxyl group on one end. The light emission from 5-aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid is also similar to that of molecules found in plants such as wheat germ.
