2-Amino-4,5-dimethylthiophene-3-carbonitrile is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of hydrazines. It has a potent activity against bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. 2-Amino-4,5-dimethylthiophene-3-carbonitrile also has an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of pyrimidines in bacteria by inhibiting the enzyme formamidopyrimidine ribonucleotide synthetase. The compound can be used in combination with chlorine or chlorinated solvents to produce formic acid, which is bactericidal against bacteria.
2-Amino-4,5-dimethylthiophene-3-carbonitrile has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram negative and Gram positive organisms.
