1-Anthrol is a coumarin derivative that is used as an antiviral agent. It is a prodrug, which is metabolized in vivo to form 1-anthrolactam and then to amines. In the presence of metal hydroxides, 1-anthrolactam reacts with sodium carbonate to form a hydroxyl group and proton. The reaction also creates radiation and particle. This reaction mechanism may be due to the hydrophobic effect or intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Thermal expansion may also contribute to the formation of these particles.
