4-Amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole is a small molecule that has shown to be a potent inhibitor of formaldehyde production in humans. It binds to the active site of the enzyme methanol dehydrogenase and blocks the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde. This means that 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole can be used as an antihypertensive drug or for treatment of metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. The thermodynamic data show that this compound is stable at high temperatures and pressures. In addition it has been tested in animal models and found to be safe with no adverse effects. 4 amino 3 hydrazino 5 mercapto 1,2,4 triazole has also been shown to inhibit the reaction between metal carbonyls and amide groups in wastewater treatment plants.
