Description

5-Amino-1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid is an organic compound with the formula HNCHC(O)NH. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. The molecule consists of two planar benzene rings joined by a triazole ring. One of the benzene rings carries an amino group and the other carries an acid hydrazide group. Hydrogen bonding between the intramolecular NH groups and the hydrogen atoms on the neighbouring carbon atoms gives rise to a zigzag chain of alternating single and double bonds. In the crystal, these chains are stacked in layers along one direction, forming a helix of molecules around a central axis. This type of structure is known as orthorhombic or centrosymmetric (depending on how many molecules are present).
