2-Amino-4-methylpyrimidine is a chemical compound that has the molecular formula C5H6N2. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 137°C and a density of 1.3 g/cm3. 2-Amino-4-methylpyrimidine has been shown to be an inhibitor of borohydride reduction, which is an important reaction in the synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen gas. The inhibition was found to be due to hydrogen bonding interactions between the 2-amino group of 2-amino-4-methylpyrimidine and the hydroxyl group on the borohydride ion (BH). This binding prevents protonation of the BH ion, which is necessary for its reaction with hydrogen gas. 2-Amino-4-methylpyrimidine also reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to form water and methyl pyridinium chloride (
