4-Amino-1-methylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid (4AMP) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme kallikrein, which is responsible for the degradation of kinins. Kinins are important mediators of inflammation and pain. 4AMP has been shown to inhibit the uptake of amino acids by cells, including lysine and phenylalanine, in cell membrane preparations. The inhibition of these amino acids may lead to an accumulation in extracellular fluid. This accumulation may have an effect on the transport of other molecules across cell membranes, such as ornithine and arginine.
