8-Aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (ANSA) is a fluorescent dye that can be used as a probe for the detection of tryptophan residues in proteins. It has been shown to react with hydrochloric acid and form anthranilic acid, which has chemical properties that are similar to those of tryptophan. ANSA can be used as a reactive sulfonation agent for the preparation of fatty acids for use in surface methodology. This compound also reacts with hydrogen chloride in the presence of light to form fluorescein, which has been shown to emit light at high frequencies when excited by an external source. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies have shown that ANSA binds to lipid bilayers, making it useful for studying membrane structure and function.
