6-Amino-1-methyl-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydropyrimidin-4(1H)-one (6AMT) is a synthetic compound that inhibits bacterial growth. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to its active form, 6-amino-1-(methylamino)-2-(thio)pyrimidin-4(1H)-one (6AME). 6AMT and 6AME inhibit the synthesis of cellular proteins by inhibiting sulfate adenylyltransferase and ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase. These enzymes are necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines, which are essential components of DNA and RNA. The antimicrobial activity of 6AMT may be due to its ability to chelate metal ions such as copper or iron, which are important in many bacterial metabolic processes.
