4-Aminobutanenitrile is a low energy organic compound that can be used as a dietary source of adiponitrile. 4-Aminobutanenitrile reacts with amines to form isothiocyanates, and also undergoes hydrogenation reduction. It has a low melting point, so it can be used in reactions at lower temperatures. 4-Aminobutanenitrile contains the bioisosteres tetrazole and organic solvents. This molecule forms hydrogen bonds with metal surfaces, and can react with the surface of the catalyst to produce an intermediate that is more reactive than the starting material.
