2-Aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid is a biochemical that belongs to the class of amides. It has been shown to inhibit the aggregation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) and reduce the formation of Aβ plaques in an animal model for Alzheimer's disease. 2-Aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid inhibits binding of dl-methionine to its receptors in rat cerebral cortex, which may be due to its ability to inhibit guanine nucleotide exchange factors. This agent also has agonist potency at m1 receptors and has been shown to inhibit the release of noradrenaline from synaptosomes. 2-Aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid also has a luminescent property, which may be useful for detection purposes.
