(S)-2-Amino-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid is a glycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It has been shown to have a high affinity for the hydroxyl group of the peptidoglycan in Gram-positive bacteria. (S)-2-Amino-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid has been used as an active analogue to vancomycin, which is a glycopeptide antibiotic that binds to the terminal D-alanine residues of peptidoglycan. This binding prevents crosslinking and polymerization of the glycan chains, which leads to cell death by autolysis.
