(S)-2-Acetamido-2-phenylacetic acid (AAPA) is a β-amino acid that has inhibitory properties. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from human neutrophils and exhibits an amide bond with the amino acid glycine. AAPA is also used in pharmaceutical preparations as an acid catalyst and to synthesize polypeptides. The drug metabolites of AAPA include antibacterial drugs such as penicillin, cephalosporin, and sulfonamide. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to identify the diastereomer of AAPA in human urine.
