It is a racemic form of tryptophan, which is a natural amino acid that is metabolized in the body to produce serotonin and melatonin. 2-Amino-3-(6-hydroxy-1H-indol-3)-ylpropanoic acid can be isolated from various plant sources, such as pyridine and butanol, or it can be prepared synthetically. It has optical isomers, which are due to its asymmetric carbon atom. The two optical isomers are L and D. The L form is more active than the D form. 2Amino 3-(6 hydroxy 1H indol 3 yl) propanoic acid has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to DNA dependent RNA polymerase.
