1-Azetidine carboxylic acid is a potent, selective and orally active ligand for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It has been shown to be efficacious in animal models of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and stroke. 1-Azetidine carboxylic acid has high affinity for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. The binding of 1-azetidine carboxylic acid to the receptor induces conformational changes that activate the G-protein coupled signaling pathway. This analog also inhibits nicotine uptake into the brain, which may contribute to its efficacy in animal models of addiction.
