3,3'-Azanediylbis(propan-1-ol) (AZA) is a homologous compound with the potential to be used as an oral chemotherapeutic agent. AZA has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of L1210 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The effect is due to inhibition of DNA synthesis and cell cycle progression. AZA also inhibits busulfan-induced myelosuppression in rats. It has been shown that AZA interacts with erythromycin, neither enhancing nor inhibiting its activity against bacteria. In addition, it appears that AZA does not interact with adriamycin or epipodophyllotoxin A, which are drugs used for cancer treatment.
AZA shows promise as an orally administered chemotherapeutic agent for myelogenous and myelosuppressive cancers (cancer of blood cells).
