Allyl Iodide (AI) is a reactive molecule that can be used as an organometallic reagent. It is used in the preparation of allyl compounds, such as acrylic acid and crotonic acid. AI reacts with water vapor to produce hydrogen gas, which can then be used for the synthesis of hydrocarbons. AI has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by reacting with the hydroxyl group on the enzyme's active site. A study showed that AI may also inhibit other enzymes with a hydroxyl group, including anti-inflammatory agents and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.
