6-Amino-4-methoxy pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine is a purine base analog. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in culture and in animal models. 6-Amino-4-methoxy pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine binds with high affinity to DNA and RNA. The ribosyl sugar moiety is necessary for this binding. This drug has been shown to be active against leukemia, lymphoma, and ovarian cancer cells at low concentrations. 6-Amino-4-methoxy pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyridine also inhibits the proliferation of human prostate cancer cells in vitro by inducing apoptosis. The x-ray crystallographic studies have shown that this drug binds preferentially to purine nucleosides such as ribofuranose (2'-deoxyribofuranose) and adenosine 5
