3-Acetyl-2,4-dimethylpyrrole is a tetrahydrocarbazole with an aliphatic structure. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 2-methylindole with methylacetylene, or by the reductive alkylation of ethyl acetate with acetic acid. 3-Acetyl-2,4-dimethylpyrrole has been shown to have an nmr spectrum that includes peaks at 13.8, 6.9 and 5.7 ppm, which correspond to the methyl groups on the pyrrole ring. The mass spectrometer reveals a molecular ion peak at m/z 174 and a fragment ion peak at m/z 98 for this compound. Chemical ionization using CH3CO+ as reagent gas yields a major product ion at m/z 98 and minor ions at m/z 91 and 77 for this compound. 3-Acetyl-2,4-dimethylp
