It inhibits photosynthetic activity by preventing the synthesis of carboxylic acids, leading to irreversible inhibition of the enzyme carboxylate synthase. The irreversible inhibition of this enzyme leads to decreased levels of malonic acid, which can cause waterlogging in plants. 1-Amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acidHydrochloride has also been shown to inhibit protein genes in plants, which may lead to changes in plant metabolism.
