2-Amino-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid is an amino acid that is used in the synthesis of a number of biologically important compounds, including proteins, hormones, and neurotransmitters. 2-Amino-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid has been shown to be synthesized by bacteria through the reductive amination of keto acids with ammonium ion as the electron donor. This amino acid can also be produced in vitro using a genetically engineered expression plasmid and borohydride reduction. The synthesis of this amino acid has also been achieved using a synthetase and oligosaccharides in vitro.
