Pipecolic acid is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine. It is produced by the oxidation of isobutyraldehyde and has been shown to have neurotrophic effects, which may be due to its ability to activate protein kinase C. Pipecolic acid also acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which may be due to its ability to bind to glutamate receptors and modulate the release of other neurotransmitters. Pipecolic acid has been shown to be an effective treatment for focal cerebral ischemia in rats and mice, with no observable side-effects.
Pipecolic acid has also been shown to have beneficial effects on Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and epilepsy. This drug binds to the proteases involved in these diseases and prevents them from breaking down proteins that are vital for neuronal function. Pipecolic acid has a low molecular weight and can therefore
