2-Amino-3-methoxybutanoicacid is a ketone that is enantioselective. It is synthesized by the reductive amination of phenylalanine with leucine catalyzed by lipase. The compound has been used in the synthesis of a number of chiral molecules and as a reagent for the determination of enantiomeric purity by gas chromatography. 2-Amino-3-methoxybutanoicacid also has been found to be an analogous substance to D,L-2-amino-3-hydroxybutyric acid, which is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II. This compound has shown some antihyperglycemic effects.
