4-Amino-N-methylaniline (4AM) is a carcinogenic chemical that is a byproduct of the production of nylon. 4AM has been shown to have an activation energy of 10.2 kJ/mol and to be toxic to cardiac muscle cells. It has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes and inactivate rat liver microsomes, which can lead to respiratory control problems in animals. 4AM is also bound by the water soluble form of glutathione, which prevents it from binding with other cellular components and being metabolized. This may explain its toxicity to aquatic organisms as well as its potential for environmental pollution.
