4-Amino-1H-imidazole-2-carboxylic acid (4AIC) is a growth factor that is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. It is a triethyl orthoformate derivative, which can be synthesized by hydrolysis of 4,5-dihydroimidazol(2)acetic acid with strong base. The compound is an imidazole with two amino groups. 4AIC has been shown to activate the matrix metalloproteinase MMP9, which degrades extracellular matrix proteins and may play a role in angiogenesis and tumor invasion. The compound also activates the transcription factor β1, which regulates cellular proliferation and differentiation. 4AIC has been shown to inhibit phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP) synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme PRPP synthetase at high concentrations. This inhibition leads to decreased levels of functional groups
