Sa2-aminoctanoic acid (SA2) is a synthetic analogue of the natural antimicrobial peptide violacein. Sa2-aminoctanoic acid is a lipophilic molecule that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Chromobacterium, Diastereomer, and Typhimurium. Sa2-aminoctanoic acid has antibacterial activity against violaceum and epoxide resistant strains of typhimurium. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may be related to disruption of the bacterial membrane or interference with the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
SA2 has also been shown to inhibit lipid biosynthesis in vitro by preventing incorporation of oleic acid into phospholipids.
