2-Amino-5-ethylthiophene-3-carbonitrile (ATE) is a nucleating agent. It is prepared by the reaction of elemental sulfur with an aldehyde, such as acetaldehyde or benzaldehyde, in the presence of zinc acetate. The resulting product is an orange crystalline solid that can be converted to its hydrochloride salt for use in various applications.
2-Amino-5-ethylthiophene-3-carbonitrile is used as a nucleating agent for polystyrene and other plastics and rubbers. ATE provides improved mechanical properties and dimensional stability to these materials. ATE also has been shown to increase the yield of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymerization reactions by preventing the formation of small particles during polymerization.
