5-(1-Aziridinyl)-2,4-dinitrobenzamide (AZA) is an immunomodulator that activates the immune system. AZA is a hydroxylated form of the parent compound aziridine, and it is known to be an agonist of the transcription-polymerase chain reaction and an inhibitor of the transcription-elongation step. AZA has been shown to have chemopreventive effects in cutaneous lesions and carcinoma cell lines. It also inhibits prostate cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. AZA may be used as a cancer gene therapy agent for squamous carcinoma or as a treatment for other forms of cancer.
