2-Aminoethylphosphonic acid (2-AP) is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit collagen synthesis. It is thought that 2-AP may be a novel, topical treatment for skin damage caused by UV light and other environmental factors. This drug has also been shown to inhibit the production of melanin in human skin cells. 2-AP inhibits the biosynthesis of nitrosoguanidine, which is an intermediate in the production of melanin by inhibition of tyrosinase activity. 2-AP also possesses antioxidant properties and can help protect against reactive oxygen species (ROS). 2-AP binds to iron, forming a stable complex that is not readily exchangeable with other substances, which may account for its ability to act as an antioxidant.
