Aminotrimethylenephosphonic acid sodiumsalt (ATMP) is an antimicrobial agent that is used to treat wastewater. It has been shown in a Langmuir adsorption isotherm study to be very effective at removing bacteria from wastewater, with a high capacity and efficiency. ATMP can be protonated by hydrochloric acid, which leads to the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond. This reaction mechanism may involve proton and hydrogen-bond interactions, as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The intramolecular hydrogen bond stabilizes the molecule and leads to a higher resistance towards hydrolysis by water molecules.
