5-Acetylpyrimidine is an aminoguanidine analog that inhibits the mammalian tyrosine kinase Bcr-Abl. It is bacteriostatic and has a potent inhibitory activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other bacteria. 5-Acetylpyrimidine has been shown to be effective against drug resistant strains of tuberculosis and against other bacterial species, such as erythromycin resistant Mycobacterium avium, by inhibiting their growth. 5-Acetylpyrimidine binds to the active site of the enzyme bcr-abl kinase and prevents it from phosphorylating its substrate, preventing protein synthesis and cell proliferation.
