3-Amino-propane-1-thiol hydrochloride is a amide that reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form 3-amino-2,2-dithiobispropionitrile. This product has been shown to have revascularizing effects in the pancreas and is being studied as a radioprotectant. It can also be used to protect cellular structures from radiation damage. The mechanism of action for this product is not yet fully understood, but it has been shown to bind to the active site of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase and inhibit the enzyme's activity. The binding of 3-amino-propane-1-thiol hydrochloride to other proteins may also play a role in its effectiveness as a radioprotectant.
