This compound is a redox potential inhibitor that binds to the active site of the protease, preventing it from cleaving peptide bonds. It inhibits the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids in bacteria and other organisms. The nitrogens in this molecule are responsible for its pesticidal activity by binding to an electron-rich region on the target enzyme, which causes electron transfer and prevents normal enzymatic activity. The 5-membered heteroaryl group is essential for its inhibitory effect on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) because it increases the rate of DNA synthesis by inhibiting DNA gyrase. This compound has been shown to be effective against arthropods and molluscs, but not against insects or nematodes.
