Telaprevir is an antiviral agent that inhibits the NS3 protease of hepatitis C virus. Telaprevir binds to the active site of the NS3 protease and prevents it from catalysing its reaction, thereby preventing viral replication. Telaprevir has been shown to be effective in combination with other antiviral agents such as boceprevir or ribavirin. Telaprevir is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, which can be obtained by diastereomerically pure synthesis. The chemical name for telaprevir is 2-azaspiro[3.5]nonane cyclobutanecarboxylate, and it has an anion charge.
