AEG 3482 is an analog of the natural ligand of the death receptor pathway. It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in cell culture and animal models, as well as anti-cancer properties in vitro. AEG 3482 binds to a signal transducer that activates the transcription factor AP-1, which may be responsible for its cell growth regulation properties. AEG 3482 also induces constitutive activation of MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways. AEG 3482 has been shown to be active against HIV infection in vitro and has been used to study viral entry into mammalian cells. The virus enters cells by attaching to a surface protein called CD4, which is found on the surface of T cells, macrophages, monocytes, and other immune system cells. This binding process leads to conformational changes in gp120 that allow it to bind with high affinity to the chemokine receptor CCR5 or CXCR4 on the surface
