2,7-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It is produced by the oxidation of salicylaldehyde with an oxidizing agent such as hydrochloric acid or trichloroacetic acid. This conversion takes place at high temperatures and pressures. 2,7-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid can also be synthesized from naphthalene, sulfuric acid and zinc chloride. The reaction mechanism for the synthesis of 2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid involves the formation of a sulfonium ion intermediate that reacts with the hydroxyl group on the naphthalene molecule to form a sulfonic acid. This process is followed by protonation to form 2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid.
2,7-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid has been shown to be toxic to plants and animals due to its ability to cause calcium ion release
