Intermedine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that has been found in the leaves of Acacia species. It has been shown to have anticancer properties in humans, and may be effective against cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and pancreas. Intermedine can reduce mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species. It also inhibits on-line cell division by binding to the DNA molecule and preventing RNA polymerase from transcribing DNA into RNA. Intermedine is a dry weight dietary supplement that is found in certain plants such as members of the family Leguminosae. The chemical structure of intermedine was elucidated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The anticancer effects of intermedine are related to its ability to inhibit cancer cell growth by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration at complex I and II levels.
