3-Amino-2-phenylpropanoic acid is an analog of the naturally occurring β-amino acid, phenylalanine. It belongs to a group of peptidomimetics that are more diverse than natural amino acids and have been used to synthesize macrolactones with high efficiency. 3APPA has shown antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 3APPA has also been shown to have asymmetric synthesis and fluorescence properties when it is isotopically labeled.
