4-Amino-3,5-dichloropyridine is a synthetic chemical that has been shown to have antibacterial activity in vitro. This drug inhibits the synthesis of enzymes that are necessary for the production of fatty acids and cholesterol by acting as an inhibitor of the enzyme chlorohydrolase. It also prevents the activation of chloride ions and can be used to treat chronic bronchitis and chronic pulmonary diseases. 4-Amino-3,5-dichloropyridine has been shown to be effective against gram negative bacteria, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis. It is also active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is a slow growing organism with a high resistance to antibiotics.
