N-Acetyl-di-O-acetyl ganciclovir (ADAG) is a prodrug of ganciclovir. It is a white crystalline substance that is soluble in organic solvents, such as trifluoroacetic acid. ADAG is produced by the condensation of 2 molecules of acetaldehyde with 1 molecule of guanidine. The reaction yield is high, the functional groups are diverse and can be recycled, and there are no environmental pollutants. ADAG has been used to treat cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS patients. It has also been used to diagnose herpes simplex virus infections because it inhibits the synthesis of guanosine nucleotides by inhibiting DNA polymerase.
