2-Azido-3-benzoyloxy-4-octadecen-1-ol is a glycosylated pentasaccharide with an aglycon that has been functionalized with trichloroacetimidate. The glycosylation of the aglycon occurs at the 2 position and the 3 position of the hexose backbone, leading to the formation of a glucosamine and galactose. The functionalization of this molecule leads to a new type of glycosphingolipid, which is a large group of lipids that are important in cell signaling. This molecule also shows antigenicity as well as antibody production. These properties make it an ideal candidate for use in human xenotransplantation.
