Delta 7-avenasterol is a plant sterol that is found in the leaves of the plant, Avena sativa. It has been shown to have antiinflammatory effects and can be used medicinally to treat inflammation. Delta 7-avenasterol binds to both the receptor for leukotrienes and the receptor for prostaglandins, inhibiting the formation of inflammatory mediators. Delta 7-avenasterol has also been shown to inhibit lipoxygenase, which is an enzyme that produces inflammatory agents from arachidonic acid. The antiinflammatory activity of delta 7-avenasterol has been demonstrated using different assays such as phytochemical study, fractionation, and bioactivity.
