3-Amino-1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid disodium salt is an analyte that has been used to monitor the scrubber of pollution and to measure nitrous and nitrite. It can be used as a fluorescence analog for metal cations. 3-Amino-1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid disodium salt exhibits fluorescence in the orthorhombic crystal system when excited with light at wavelengths between 300 nm and 370 nm. The oxygen atoms in this molecule are responsible for the fluorescence. Nitrous oxide is a common contaminant in 3-amino-1,5-naphthalene disulfonic acid disodium salt samples. Nitrite ions may also interfere with readings from this compound's fluorescence detector.
