4-Azidoaniline hydrochloride is a guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein) antagonist that has been used to study the role of G proteins in signal transduction. 4-Azidoaniline hydrochloride is also used for the treatment of leukemia, and it may inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes. It has been shown that 4-azidoaniline hydrochloride can be used to activate epidermal growth factor receptors and induce epidermal growth factor production. This drug also has been shown to have optical properties that allow it to be used as a photosensitizer to treat cancerous lesions.
