Adamantane-1,3-diamine is a heterocyclic compound that is an isomer of adamantane. Adamantane-1,3-diamine has been used in the synthesis of diphenyl ethers and diammonium salts. Adamantane-1,3-diamine can be prepared by ring opening of butyric acid with ammonia or ammonium chloride to form the amide or by reacting aniline with acetic acid to produce the imine. The molecule can also be prepared by reacting nitroethane with phosphorus pentachloride to form nitroethoxychloropropionitrile which is then reacted with ammonia or ammonium chloride to produce the amide. Adamantane-1,3-diamine has been used as a precursor for making other compounds such as alicyclic compounds, nipecotic acids, and anions.
