3-Amino-6-phenylpyridazine (3AP) is a synthetic compound that induces apoptosis in cancer cells. 3AP activates caspase 1, the initiator caspase of the apoptotic pathway. It binds to the kinase domain of dapk1, which is a pro-apoptotic protein, and causes its activation. This leads to an increase in pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and Bak, which then translocate to mitochondria and trigger cytochrome C release. 3AP also inhibits tyrosine phosphatases and prevents the inhibition of phosphorylation of pro-apoptotic proteins by these enzymes. 3AP has been shown to induce cell death in certain cancer cells without affecting normal cells, making it a potential drug target for cancer therapy.
