It is used as a crosslinker in biochemistry and has been shown to have biological properties in plants. 7-Amino-4-methyl-3-coumarinacetic acid N-succinimidyl ester reacts with the acidic groups of proteins, DNA, or RNA, and is an important component of some second order rate constants. This chemical is also used for the neutralization of histological stains such as haematoxylin.
