Description:
1-Acetyl-3,5-dimethyl adamantane is a memantine analog that has been shown to have similar efficacy and potency against Alzheimer's disease. The 1-acetyl group in the adamantane nucleus provides additional steric protection to the amine group of memantine. This compound is extracted from benzene, purified by ethyl acetate, and recrystallized with isopropyl alcohol. It can be hydrolyzed with acetylamine and acetonitrile or hydrochloric acid to form memantine hydrochloride.
