N-Acetyl-D-penicillamine is a chelating agent that binds to metal ions, such as copper and iron, which are involved in the production of reactive oxygen species. It also has proapoptotic effects in vivo. N-Acetyl-D-penicillamine can be used for the treatment of cancer, because it inhibits the activity of nitrous oxide reductase and nitric oxide synthase, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. This drug also has antibacterial efficacy against gram negative bacteria and is membrane permeable. N-Acetyl-D-penicillamine is not active against many gram positive bacteria because they lack an outer membrane.
