It can be removed by debromination with hydrogen bromide. 21-Acetyloxy-pregna-1,4,9(11),16-tetraene-3,20-dione is also produced when prednisolone is synthesized and has been shown to be a precursor to carbonyl formation. The presence of this impurity in pharmaceuticals may lead to microbial transformation or treatment method failure.
